Intended Outcomes

Personal Development is a programme aimed to prepare our students for a safe, healthy and successful adult lifeWe have divided our programme into 4 strands: Health and Wellbeing, Relationships, Living in the wider world and Citizenship. Personal development isn’t taught as a separate subject, but is embedded throughout the curriculum and tutor programme. Here are a list of the main units covered throughout year 7. 

  • Course Implementation

    Skills, Values and Goals – Tutor programme 

    A unit to help with students with the transition to secondary school, to introduce students to the importance of our Bewdley Values and to allow them to understand the process of setting goals. There are no formal assessments in the tutor programme. Student progress is monitored in lessons verbally and through completion of reflective writing.   

    Healthy Relationships – Tutor programme 

    A unit looking at friendship and what makes a good friend and then moving on to look at what is a relationship and the different types of relationships. There are no formal assessments in the tutor programme. Student progress is monitored in lessons verbally and through completion of reflective writing.   

    Mental Health and Wellbeing – Tutor Programme 

    An important introduction into what is Mental Health and then starting to break down the misconceptions surrounding mental health. There are no formal assessments in the tutor programme. Student progress is monitored in lessons verbally and through completion of reflective writing.   

    Promoting Mental Health – Tutor programme 

    Students will examining the importance of self care and each week will examine one of the 5 ways to wellbeing; Give to others (Kindness), Connect with other people, Be physically active, Learn new skills, Pay attention to the present moment (mindfulness). There are no formal assessments in the tutor programme. Student progress is monitored in lessons verbally and through completion of reflective writing.   

    Managing risk – Tutor programme 

    A unit examining some key aspects of online safety including navigating social media safely, online friendships, sharing photos and videos as well as gaming. There are no formal assessments in the tutor programme. Student progress is monitored in lessons verbally and through completion of reflective writing.   

    Puberty – RSE unit 

    We will learn about the male and female reproductive system, look at the changes that occur during puberty and study menstrual wellbeing.  Confidence checkers are used at the start and end of the unit to find out what students know before they are taught the unit and what they are know after.  

    Gender and Sexual Equality – RSE Unit 

    We study equality and protected characteristics and then focus our attention on gender stereotyping, sexual orientation and sexual identity. Confidence checkers are used at the start and end of the unit to find out what students know before they are taught the unit and what they are know after.  

    Your Body -RSE unit 

    We look at the male and female genitalia and talk about masturbation, FGM and start to understand the importance of consent. Confidence checkers are used at the start and end of the unit to find out what students know before they are taught the unit and what they are know after.  

    Nationwide Finance Sessions 

    Nationwide Building society deliver our year 7 finance unit which will look at the importance of budgeting as well as ways to bank and the use of current and savings accounts. We use google forms after most workshops, guest speakers or other activities involving external agenciesWe use this as a way to find out what they learnt from the activity but also find out how they think it can be improved in the future.  

    Action for Children workshops 

    Action for Children deliver a transition workshop at the start of the year and a resilience workshop at the end of the year, both designed to equip our students with the tools required to manage change, stress and worry. We use google forms after most workshops, guest speakers or other activities involving external agenciesWe use this as a way to find out what they learnt from the activity but also find out how they think it can be improved in the future.  

Learning Impact

The full impact of our Personal development programme will not be assessable during their time at school but we do use a range of methods to measure the impact of what we are doing where possibleThis takes the form of google forms after most workshops, guest speakers or other activities involving external agencies.
