Year 7 Music Course Modules


  • 7.1 Rhythm and Pulse.

    Students explore the musical elements and develop traditional rhythmic notation skills. They will work together as a class and in small groups to play, perform and compose their own rhythms.

    Students will be assessed on their own part within class performances as well as working together as a group to produce a well organised rhythmic composition.
    Students will have the opportunity to peer assess and comment on their own progress.

  • 7.2 Just Play!

    This is a whole class performance module where students develop basic keyboard skills (or build on developed skills) and extend the skills learned in our earlier
    module. Students will read from a prepared lead sheet and learn primary and secondary chords on a choice of classroom instruments.

    Students who have previous instrumental skill will be encouraged to bring their own instruments.

    Assessment will be made through whole class performances.

    Students will have to opportunity to perform at the Schools’ Christmas Concert and take a leading role if they wish.

  • 7.3 Great Composers (Keyboard Skills)

    This module develops specific keyboard skills where students focus on keyboard or piano. Students develop keyboard notation skills and work to develop using two hands at the keyboard / piano playing “Ode to Joy” by Beethoven. More experienced pianists will be encouraged to work on more challenging pieces which require a greater level dexterity and hand co-ordination.

    Assessment will be made through individual assessment and recordings.

  • 7.4 Intro to Music Technology

    This module is an introduction to Music Technology, including: Garageband, Muse Score and Audacity.
    Students will have the opportunity to link previously performed keyboard pieces into Garageband using either real time or step input. Simple editing tools will be used to manipulate a known keyboard piece.

    Assessment will be made in solo / paired music technology arrangements.

  • 5 Power of the Pentatonic!

    This module looks at Pentatonic Scales and their use and why they are such a powerful composition tool.

    Students will perform and improvise heterophonic pieces as a class and within smaller groups. Some students will take a leading role and go on to develop extended solo sections.

    Assessment will be made through weekly observations and whole class performance recordings.

  • 7.6 Heroes and Villains

    This final module gives students a real opportunity to develop compositional skills to a set brief.

    Students will compose short “Fixed Ideas” or “Leitmotifs” for their chosen Hero or Villain! A range of instruments will be available including music technology.
    Assessment will be made through solo, paired or small group performances of compositions.

Year 8 Music Course Modules


  • 8.1 Samba!

    Students will develop their musical memory, rhythmic skills and techniques on a range of traditional and classroom Samba instruments.

    Some students will take a leading role and develop significant percussion skills taking solo sections, others may wish to perform as the class “Bateria.”

    In this module, we will work as a whole class culminating a class performance with an opportunity to perform within our Christmas Concert.

  • 8.2 Just Play!

    This is a whole class performance module where students continue to develop basic classroom instrument skills.
    Students will read from a prepared lead sheet and or printed notation.
    Students who have previous instrumental skill will be encouraged to bring their own instruments.
    Assessment will be made through whole class performances.

    Students will have to opportunity to perform at the Schools’ Christmas Concert and take a leading role if they wish.

  • 8.3 Pachelbel’s Canon

    This module looks at building major and minor triads in root position and inversions. Performing the well-known sequence fluently on keyboard or piano.

    More experienced keyboard players will be encouraged to take on more challenging variations of this piece developing their own ideas.

    Assessment will take place though weekly monitoring and final paired or solo performances.

  • 8.4 Blues and Improvisation

    This module introduces students to the familiar 12 bar blues structure and walking bass line. We re visit the pentatonic scale and introduce the blues scale as an improvisation tool.

    Students will be encouraged to make initial improvisations and perform together in groups.

    Assessment will be made through weekly monitoring and final recorded performances.

  • 8.5 Reggae!

    This module looks at Reggae, style and syncopation, performing as a class and within small groups.

    Students perform form lead sheets and traditional notation to create performances of well-known Reggae pieces.

    Assessment will be made through weekly monitoring and a final recorded performance.

  • 8.6 Music for Film

    This module gives students the opportunity to use music technology to compose and develop ideas for a specific scene.

    Musical elements, devices and clichés will be revisited and explored.

    Assessment will be made through individual or solo compositions.
